I remember about a year ago listening to music and feeling just so sad for the world my girls were inheriting. Leading the charts were songs that glorified date rape and were by artists who insisted on performing with half naked women climbing all over them.
What kind of messages are girls getting?
Girls were learning to be objects rather than subjects. They were learning to view themselves from the eyes of others rather than their own eyes. They were learning that girls are meek and quiet and the source of entertainment. And all of this hurts boys as well as girls.
But this is nothing new. For ages people have written about girls being taught to hide themselves and their talents away in order to not offend.
In terms of pop music the landscape was pretty bleak.
But then my faith in the universe was restored when I saw this.

Could those little girls be more adorable?
I think the reason this song is so adorable when little kids sing it is because they aren’t the words of a child. We don’t often hear toddlers singing of “frozen fractals all around.”
And yet the story being told is their story and the story of little girls all around the world. Breaking through. Refusing to be silenced. Making their voices heard. Letting it all go.
I could listen to this song all day, and that’s good because with some princess obsessed daughters, I do listen to this song all day.
Finally, I think Disney got it right.
My First Linky Party
And with that, I want to announce my first linky party called My Soul Speaks. Bloggers, please feel free to link up anything that you have written recently that speaks to your soul and makes you happy. It can be anything. An anecdote, a song, a story, or just your thoughts. Whatever makes you happy and makes you smile or whatever your favorite post was from the week.
Please either post a link to this blog on your post or include this button, and of course, please make sure to visit at least a couple of other blogs so that we can all get a little bit of inspiration during this exhausting part of the week.
And tell your bloggy friends too. It’s my first linky party; I don’t want to be the only one to show up. That would be a sad first party indeed.
Link Up!!
